How often do you expect a gear slot to turn over / upgrade?

I remember back in the day that you didn't really get much in the way of gear for... well... 30+ levels after starting your character.  And then when you did, you gained gear slowly.  And when, finally, you had a full set... you would look through your gear and target... something.  ONE thing... then you would do some research on what good options were for you in that slot.  You'd ask in guild, ask in zonewide, do some internet surfing...

You would find that there were a LOT of options for that slot, but only a very few with the appropriate stats for you that you were capable of getting at your current level.  And so you would target those few.  You would hunt where they dropped... whether that be a zonewide drop from a random mob, or a named mob you needed to camp, or whatever... Sure, you might get other drops for other slots... but you didn't expect to.  You were hunting... SOMETHING...

And that SOMETHING would typically take a while.  Then, once you got it, you would repeat the cycle.  Target a slot for upgrade, do research, try to replace.  This meant that turning over any ONE slot of gear (at least intentionally) could be something you did every few months (or more).

Contrast that with today's games.  I'm not proud, I'll tell you that I'm playing WoW right now because I have found a guild of great people I enjoy spending time with.  My main is a healer (Paladin) - and I heal in our progresison group.  But I wanted a ranged DPS alt... for Battlegrounds and also to raid in our casual group.  From one saturday to the next I leveled my long idle mage from 100 to 110 (max) and a gearscore of 740 something up to 880 something.  Sure I played a lot that week... but that means that in ONE WEEK... I turned all of my gear slots over repeatedly and ended up with respectable gear... not at the current "you're uber" bench of 900, but respectable.

What are YOU expecting from the game?  How often do YOU want a single slot to turn over?  Does the concept even matter to you?  (i.e. do you care how fast your gear gets upgraded)

I know some people are really passionate about this, but not that big if deal for me. I am fine with something every 10 levels or so.

What I hope not to see is such a difference between level 49 and level 50 gear. A lot of games have gear as you level, then suddenly at max level, you have to replace all your gear.

I agree with you here, hopefully vertical gear acquisitions are indeed rare.

On the other hand, VR seems to be making situational, or horizontal, gear a thing, so I would want to get quite a bit of that. I don't want to farm a week to get into a cold place, I do want to farm for a weak to get a piece of gear in a set that will make me just a little bit stronger.

All of that said, I hope gear isn't so important people consider it another form of leveling.

Agreed, the gear I work on leveling up should still mean something at max level. Hopefully this is realized in VR's vision for mid game to be as fun as end game.

I expect them to do what they said they will do in the FAQ:

13.9 What is your philosophy on item proliferation and drops?

Our desire to bring back the value and personality of items drives our item design. This means that the frequency of upgrades will be slower and when you do get a new piece of gear not only will the experience be memorable but so will the item. We want you to collect your items and be able to remember their names. When you get that epic item or rare drop after an incredible dungeon crawl, we want you to be in awe of what you have accomplished and the reward that came from it. Items will be memorable, deserved, cherished, and desired.

OH my!  So I did!  Apparently it's a concept that matters to me enough to post... but not enough to remember that I already posted :)

As long as gear last long enough and is important enough that I remember what I have, then I'm good. The past few years of games have gear changing so often, I don't even look at the name, just how many green vs red stats it has (when compared to equipped items), and equip it.

I so miss the days of being proud of my weapons and armor, and being able to see someone with an item and know what it is without needing to ask or inspect, just because good items were visibly unique.

Every slot? A slow turn over spanning 15-20 levels. Or anywhere from 2-4 full upgrades from min-max level before attempting to find BiS items.

    Exactly that !

I enjoyed the way eqoa did gear replacement. You were able to change some gear out every 3 to 5 levels, and while you were leveling the better gear to wear was usually crafted until you hit max level. The best part is that the crafted gear did scale some so replacement was optional until you were 10 levels past where you could first equip it.
