  I suspect in the next 5 years or so VR could get access to AI tools to modify the game in ways we would enjoy. Graphics changes, dynamic economy management, troll and anti cheat moderation etc. This may be the last custom, hand made large MMO game that will ever be created. It's lovingly being crafted by people who are dedicated to a vision of social gameplay focusing on the experience of shared stories and adventures. It feels unique and historically significant to watch them progress towards that goal.
  
  Where else would you imagine this game using AI as a plug-in tool for some elements of the game in the near future?

  For AI you need alot of computing power, atm and probably in the next years you only get that from graphic cards. Without the newest graphic card youll probably have not enough computing power to use AI beside the game. Unless you use current technology like DLSS which renders a smaller resolution and upscale it with AI, making the game run alot faster (but not looking better). Similar you could train an AI to make a mediocre looking game look better but that would need alot of extra GPU power, especially for real time.

  Maybe in 5 years we have a CPU, a GPU and an AIU (for all the AI stuff) in our PC's because there is a limit on how big and how hot GPU's can or should get. Youll never need a heater, just turn on your PC.

  Where some games start advertising AI is for dialogs. Train your NPC with local lore and his job, life and such and let him speak with you and answer your questions.
