Benjamin Dean, Director of Communications

Hello! Tell the fans a little bit about yourself.

I have fans? Why didn’t you tell me?! Oh.. you mean Pantheon fans. Gotcha.

I’m Benjamin Dean, I’m the Director of Communications at Visionary Realms. I’ve been a gamer my entire life. I started off my professional career as an actor, director, stage manager, production manager, and pretty much anything else I could get into in regards to entertainment. But through it all I was spending every spare minute I had playing video games. And come 1999, that meant one game. You know the one.

How did you get into the video game industry?

I started over 10 years ago by writing for Ten Ton Hammer. I was playing Vanguard and I saw a post on the official forums that TTH was looking for a guide writer. So I applied and it worked out. From there I moved into od/eds and other columns, became the managing editor, executive editor and eventually moved into PR and marketing for their parent company at the time.

This led me to start doing some independent promotional work for the gaming industry, and eventually led me right here, to VRI.

What exactly is a Director of Communications?

I have my hands in everything public-facing. I oversee the teams and individuals in Community Management, promotions and marketing, brand management and so on. Basically anything official that hits the eyes or ears of the gaming crowd falls under my purview in one form or another.

And that’s what’s so cool about this gig. It’s so varied. I get to be involved in all sorts of cool stuff like filming of videos, live streams, this newsletter, advertising campaigns like the one we just wrapped up at Comic-Con, gaming conventions, social media… there’s a little bit of everything and we have some super talented people working on these things. I often feel lucky I get to be a part of it.

This isn’t your first go around with the VR team, what about this project drew you back in?

I came on board at the very start of the company. Funny story – I was actually in the middle of creating a new community site for classic-spirited MMOs because I desperately wanted one to be made and figured if we could get all of us like-minded people from the community together it would make a studio pitch very easy. While I was doing the preliminary work for that I looked up Brad to see what he was up to (naturally, as he’s kind of one of the reasons any of us want this kind of game). I saw he was gearing up to launch Visionary Realms (which at the time didn’t even have a name). I reached out and rambled on how I NEEDED to be a part of the project. Next thing you know I was brought on as a PR manager, and eventually Director of Communications.

In 2014 I had to take a brief leave for some personal reasons, but as I continued to see the drive and dedication of the team I had to come back. I reached out to Brad and Chris Rowan to see if they still had a spot for me and lucky for me, they did.

Thanks for your time, is there anything you would like to add?

I’m just pumped. Seeing so many on our forums, on our social media, watching our vids and streams, talking about the game on other websites and in other games… it’s all so exciting. We’ve all wanted this to happen for soooo long, and getting to be a part of it all – wow – that’s a rare lifetime opportunity. It’s been 18 years in the making, and it’s all happening now. How could anyone NOT be excited?
