It was mid-morning before the group actually started moving, to the obvious annoyance of Pygellus, this, in turn, caused much merriment for Rake, who delighted in extolling the virtues of an “early” start.
“It's good to be moving, nice early start, eh, Pygellus?” poked Rake
“Though the lack of mounts could suggest a lack foresight...” he added
Daevid scanned the bulk of Bentak who walked behind him, his mind refusing to picture any beast of burden big enough for this giant.
“Nay, not for me lad” chortled Bentak, seeing himself being examined with such open incredulity.
“My people don't ride mounts, we are strong enough to run for days without rest and agile enough for the most arduous of terrain.  No need to be carried,” he stated proudly.
Travelling was slow, they followed an animal trail through the forest, a sinuous path that was just wide enough for them to walk single file, the woodland noises washed over them, interrupted on occasion by the sound of Bentak striking a low hanging tree limb with his head, which was usually followed by a colourful description of how he felt about his surroundings.
“Maybe you would have more luck if you watched out for those, Bentak?” offered Rake solicitously, some silences have weight, Bentaks had weight and menace.
“Just trying to help.” menacing silence met this comment too.
“Friends do that.” The straw that broke the camels back, except in this instance Rake discarded said straw and had thrown on an anvil.  Bentak surged forward towards Rake, arms outstretched, eyes blazing, to find that his feet had as much awareness as his head when it came to tree limbs.  The surge became a dive, and not a particularly graceful one at that, as his feet caught a “stray” root, not wanting to be left out momentum took over and aided him forward sliding him through the undergrowth and proficiently picking up much in the way of forest detritus.  This all culminated with him rolling into the base of a tree.  Daevid looked at the prodigious mound of leaves, twigs and mud, which was now inert and from which emanated a low growling noise.
“Bentak, we may differ on the meaning of agility.”

After Bentak had recovered his composure and shot many dark looks at Rake, the companions once again moved on.  This was all new to Daevid, more so than any here would guess.  His memory was full of holes, he only had brief glimpses of his past, paintings of single moments.  Of course, he knew he had one, knew that he and Pygellus had some history, he just had nothing tangible to grasp.  It was so depressing, he let his mind wander around his surroundings, it was remarkable that so much life could be so hidden.  It piqued his curiosity, and without any conscious effort or intent, he pushed his mind out, abruptly he was assailed with scents, sounds and movement.  He felt he knew where every dweller of the forest was. It was overwhelming him, his head felt it was trapped in a vice, slowly being crushed by the overload on his senses.  Beatings of a hundred hearts echoed in his ears, his mouth was full of mud, blood, leaves.  It was choking him.  His body wanted to fight, to run, but mostly to hunt.  His teeth ached to be sinking into flesh and sinew,  dragging the meat to his den.  To run in pursuit, his muscles rippling under his fur, pushing him onward.   Then he was flying, his wings stretched wide catching the thermals, while he scanned the land below him.  Movement, he dropped, his wings pulled in, faster and faster he descended, finally a flare of his wings and his talons sink into the fleeing prey and he lifted skywards again.  Then he was fleeing low to the ground, a shadow over him, he must run, his heart beating so fast he felt it would break from his chest.  He ran zigzagging left and right, terror filling him.  Faster, he must run faster, no shadow anymore, faster, faster.  Then pain, talons slicing into him, lifting him off the ground. Blackness.
