I could not find this topic. I hope we will need or have boats in the game?? We have all that water out there, I am hoping there will be something.

Yes there is something about this in the FAQ. Post release there is an option to have boats to travel around the sea. Nothing is set in stone but they keep this a possible thing. Swimming will be in game for sure and you can have items or buffs for underwater breathing. So there will be under water content as well.

I'm willing to bet there will be a couple ocean zones with scattered islands and a boat that travels through on a set path like EQ. Personal boats? Eh.

I suspect this is on the things to consider a year after launch list. Interesting but far less critical than other things unless they see it as relatively easy to do and an attractive thing to put in the marketing at release. Meaning private boats - boats traveling between major hubs probably isn't that hard to do if desired. If you don't mind them poofing now and then and leaving you in the water, at least.

One thing Archeage emphasized was boats and ocean combat. I have no idea how well that did for them - actually I don't think anything did that well for them but they were a Korean-style PvP focused game far different than anything we want Pantheon to be.

I thought ships in Archeage were pretty fun, but it really all had to do with that whole weird thing with the backpacks full of different goods (sorry, can't remember what they were called).  I was just looking at a post from June where Brad was talking about pets.  He also mentions vehicles and describes a system (that sounds similar to Archeage boats) that may come to PRF some time after release.  We'll definitely have ferry-type boats, though, to take us from places like Highbrace to other places like Highbrace (mmmm....Highbrace)!

As high seas adventure calls to many of us, and Pantheon has plenty of water. I would believe we can expect plenty to do on and in the seas. Not so certain that we will see ship to ship combat, but I bet we will have plenty of sails aloft to carry us where we want to venture.

If trade goods have fluctuating prices from area to area boats could really enhance a character's experience that wanted to spend some time trading. Since the game is PVE oriented it would have to be NPC/Mob or environmental threats. I saw Archeage brought up as an example and am going to tread carefully around the subject without going off about the game itself. I think one of the things they did that was interesting conceptually, though it turned into a endless cash grab grind due to implementation, was the boat was divided into pieces essentially. Each piece could be upgraded and pieces could be removed or added to the boat. You could upgrade a sail for instance and move a bit faster based on teir, you could sacrifice cannons for more slots to hold trade packs, or you could make a much more offensive ship with higher firepower to PvP or escort the larger and comparatively defenseless merchant ships.

I think that concepts like what I mentioned before are very viable and they add a dimension to the game to break up the proverbial grind. It also allows a segment of crafters to emerge that can craft and sell said pieces to people who don't necessarily want to do it themselves. That being said AA (Trion's) implementation was less than ideal but the core concepts were really great. So maybe there could be something in that vein though hopefully with a lot more care and thought put into the development of such a system.

As was said before I think this might be a post launch development, though I think basic ships for travel could easily be done from the get go. It could also easily be limited by being very expensive/time consuming so that not everyone has a ship right off the bat or at all. Especially if you actually have to craft to build the ship yourself or buy one from another player instead on an NPC.

Maybe we'll see something like that on a pvp ruleset server..that would be fun.  And the Dark Myr get to play with their dirges,  emptying enemy ships and drowning the enemies.   lol (geez I sound like I want back in pvp again..hehehe)

There will be lots of underwater to explore. How much we dont know, ships could be involved? I used to love jumpping off the ships in EQ1 to explore areas. So much depth we just dont see today.
