What about Classes & Jobs from other MMORPGs?

So far I like what I'm seeing but I was wondering if the Devs are looking at Classes & Jobs from other MMORPGs franchises?  I've been a long time fan of EQ1, EQ2 and Anarchy Online, but I also really like some of the jobs from Final Fantasy XI. I'm a big fan of pet & charm classes and one of my favorites was the Puppetmaster from FFXI. So many different combinations of putting together your puppet for different needs for the party.

Some folks are talking about Blood mages...

Personally I'd toss in a vote for a more dedicated transformer like early WoW druids. It needed more balance work but they could change from a type of rogue, to a type of tank, to a type of caster..mid fight. EQ1 had a few transforming classes but they didnt do it constantly nor change their play style much with each transformation.

I remember Druids back in EQ1 can obtain a spell that can stop the rain in a zone. Weather control would be interesting.

In that case you will enjoy reading up on VR's plans for an actual weather system. Environment can hurt you, classes will have spells that help you to withstand or change environments. It's pretty cool

Hello everyone. Those classes with the ablities to control weather, will that effect players in town or out of combat areas? or just only in that area of combat that they are in? Can player A change weather to snowing, while player B doesnt like it, changes it rain, and player C wants sun. All three player are nearby or in same group. Or will it be only one type of atmosphere changing, environment change per combat? I know changing weather is suppose to be during certain encounter, when a group encounters certain areas. Is the weather changing only for that area the group is in, that is encounting the mobs/boss?

I have no idea. I imagine VR would keep a close eye on the abilities though. Trolling would definately happen, especially if you switched the weather to something that was bad for the group or good for the mob.

I really like the concept that is the Mesmer from Guild Wars 2. Illusion and trickster specialist.
Maybe the enchanater or summoner will have some similarities.

Another one is the Dervish from original Guild Wars, cloth wearing holy fighter with a scythe. It was just a badass concept imo.

Firstly, climates and weather are not necessarily the same thing. Climates = scorching, frigid, anaerobic, toxic, windshear, pressure. Weather = snow, rain, sun, etc. I am fairly certain that a druid's ability to change the climate will be limited to a fairly small area. No one has said anything about changing the actual weather yet, although it would make sense for them to be tied to a certain degree. Anyway, I highly doubt they will ever be able to affect the whole zone, even at high levels. I'm sure as the druid levels up, the radius of effect will get larger and last longer, but still probably only large enough to cover an area your group is camping. Or perhaps an area that is always centered on the druid so the climate changes wherever the druid goes. This still carries some trolling potential and I'm sure we'll hear more details about it soon enough. But I really don't think it's going to be as profound as most people assume. It'll still be very useful. But it doesn't need to affect the whole zone to be useful. There would be too much conflict between druids in the zone and there's no real need to affect an area that you're nowhere near anyway. Just big enough to cover your camp.

Hi hi folks. For down time, giggles and jinx, etc, what happens if player A say were in town or near town, on outskirt of town and casted a spell that affected, or effects the area nearby? And player B thought the prank was not funny and counters it with something, while everyone in town or nearby gets affected by it? It would be nice that it is suppose to be used for situations when the party is in that environment to make it easier for the group to handle the mobs and boss(es). Or will it only work when there is "ring showing"? As player A trieds to cast spell counter scorching effects in town or nearby a town, "Unable to cast spell, no scorching effect found?" Or will it say you are not able to cast spell, too close to town or too close to village, etc.

FFXI had different weather patterns and even NPCs scattered in the world to help predict the weather. I remember having to "witness" every weather pattern in order to unlock the Summoner job. Such fond memories.

I think in expansions we can expect to see less "traditional" classes. They have hinted at the possibility of more orignal classes like VG's Bloodmage. But I dont expect them to borrow to heavily from other MMOs. I would say probably expect new classes with a Brad/VR flair.

My dream is a hybrid version of Ninja from XI and Riftstalker from Rift. Really, leather tanks just have a certain pizzazz for me.

Well as XI Ninja was my main for many years, I cant say I blame you. If I dont have a tank at least as complex, challenging, and interesting as Ninja, then Im not gonna be a tank. I love support (thats support not healer) and tank roles. And I know we dont know all the details of Crusader, Warrior, and Dire Lord. But they just scream traditional to me and I cant get too excited about them. Maybe I will change my mind as more details unfold, but Im pretty sure I wont be playing a Pantheon tank until an expansion comes out with a unique tank. It wouldnt even have to be a ninja or a leather tank, just different. Maybe something like a caster tank. I never played Rift so Im not familiar with Riftstalker.

Rift stalker is like what would happen if Ninja had a lot of teleports, but instead of shadows you just had a bunch of magical shields. More of a flavor difference from traditional tanks instead of the true break from tradition Ninja was. I mean frankly after playing both XI ninja and Riftstalker it made it physically painful for me to play Ninja in XIV. I'll never forgive  that game for how it butchered Summoner though; it totally ruined the very unique aspects Final Fantasy Summoners enjoy in order to make a shitty Demonology Warlock clone.

Sorry I got on a tangent there, I've just grown to despise XIV more and more over time. I agree that traditional tanking is kind of played for me after decades of time, so I too will probably venture into support. Depends on how crusader works out, or what we see in testing. I intend to break the **** out of every job I can in the testing phase to find the next ninja or crash the server with a bug, whichever comes first.

I have the same exact feelings about FF-XIV. I gave that game so many chances and eventually I had to walk away in disgust. The community of beta testers poured their hearts into their feedback and yet the Devs ignored everyone and published their half-baked game. Their first 1.1 reboot of the game was still terrible followed by the 2.0 reboot which made the game into a generic MMORPG. The Summoner was a pale imitation of that job. It was also annoying seeing the Devs adjusting the economy by stealing everyone's Gil by sliding the decimal place to the left by one.
