Fae Race

    Hello forums,

I got some news from my significant other this morning about how he felt towards one of Aradune's comments during the AMA on Reddit. It's been a really bumpy road trying to get my husband excited about Pantheon but I wanted to just put down the idea of a fae or fairy race with wings like in Everquest 2 has him very excited.
He wanted me to let the forums and the developers know that this race alone would make him hop on board as it was his favorite race from the mmorpg worlds he has played.

He also mentioned im lucky I love dwarves so much because it's a usual race. *shrugs*
    Dwarves ftw.

But yea. Think about it while you are implementing bards and necros. I'm sure IstuulaBRO can whip up some fantastic lore for fae. Get their flutterbutts in the game!

    Thanks,

    -Todd

Played a Fae thing as a main in EQ2 for a bit.

I think he said post launch, it's a possibility. It's important to remember that this isn't Norrath however... So it might be difficult to implement a PC if there is a severe lack of NPCs around. I mean, heck EQ1 had plenty of fairies, but didn't get a Fae until EQ2.

With that said, I would totally be down for tiny winged backstabber.

I definitely don't like the idea of a Fae - I played eq2 myself, I just found it too unrealistic. Or I guess it seemed to much like a character WoW should have.

Sad to hear you didn't enjoy the Fae Race. There are a lot of fans of that one and other winged races.

     Hey Todd -

While we will certainly have Faes in game (was just scrawling about a certain group of them a few minutes ago, actually), they are not slated to be a playable race at this time. I understand that will be a disappointment to some people (and a cause for elation in others, apparently ;) ), but it is just not in the pipeline at this time (ie, Launch).

Heparin, I do agree that Faes require a deft hand when played. For whatever reason, winged little persons clash with realism when not properly introduced. Unfortunately, we can read them as childish in those instances -- which is a form they shouldn't be reduced to. It's my job to represent them well, because they're lovely, wild things.

Does that mean there won't ever be such a thing as a fae playable race? I won't say that, of course. But I'd rather be upfront with my fellow bro and speak to what we know at this very moment.

Brownies with wings.  Ugh.  I always like playing a crafter of some sort that involves alchemy.  I get the feeling that with these things?  I may have to craft up some insecticides.  And RAID has a whole new meaning....

Oh lol. Don't worry about it. But then again my husband was pretty sad.

Did I mention your word-craft is amazing? Just saying. One of the reasons I'll be playing is because of the writing you did for each race and everything else thus far

I would love to see a winged race...but it would be really nice to see a race with feathered wings for once. They could be a mountain race, living in the craggy hills, or the deep forest and living in the treetops...and the feathers and wing shapes could be based on real life representations.

Peregrine falcon style, with pointed wingtips...or even parrot styled with wild tropical colors. Even the hair could be feathers...

I would love to see something new rather than the traditional faery races.

Unrealistc-pfft. Is  an elf realistic? Is a Skar realistic? Is a Dark Myr realistic? No

I also played eq2 and had a fae character. Horizon"s had dragon characters. But I do not want to see them ingame as characters. The lore makes them so powerfull every group would have one to hide behind.

EQ1 had brownies. not as pc but as npc's. They were unrealistic but as a druid I didn't want to tangle with them on an even scale. They mostly were socialistic and brought friends .

So if you 're looking for realistc you may be dissapointed with Pantheon- and the whole genre- to find what is real and not. Myself I love the genre and If you want fae pc's then so be it. I like the little guys. But make them magic users because realiticly one swipe of a battle axe or bastard sword would remoce that fae from existance. No cleric, no matter what level he is can put him together again. Kinda like Humty Dumpty

If you look at anatomy of a bipedal creature you would see that Elf, Skar and Dark Myr can easily be more realistic than Fae.  Why?  There are no muscle attachment points to operate the wings, not when you have 2 arms which shoulder blades, etc in the skeletal structure.  Then there is the issue of lift dynamics.  Fae wings on a human sized creature would be too small to generate enough lift.  Don't throw in 'but magic!' as we're talking about being realistic here.

You could, however, have wings but you'd have to lose your arms.  And with no arms how will you carry weapons?  How would you wear clothes?  Armor?  You'd be a naked no-hands half-bird that would bring what to a party?

Personally, not a huge fan of the Fae, but, they do seem to be a very popular race, so down the line if there's a good way to introduce them, I know quite a few people who would be happy. Really depends on if they fit in the world as a playable race, though.

I would love to see a race of evil, corrupted fae. Their backstory is they started as merry tricksters but they slowly became corrupted and became brutal and tribalistic. Their corruption caused them to lose their magic and to grow huge and bloated, unable to fly. In their rage, they mutilate themselves, cutting and scaring their useless wings, leaving most with little more than slashed stumps where their wings once were. They would have an anarchist, apocalyptic aesthetic. Their racial ability would be increased damage / power the lower their HP.

That would be an interesting, fresh take and it would avoid the main objection some have (the unbelievableness of standard, cartoony fae).
