Gambling In Game

Does anyone else miss the old Bazaar gambling games people would run on their rich alts? Roll the magic die between x values and you win, or just straight up dice style games there were many variations people would run.

I never got too deep into it (some people I knew were gambling 200k plat a roll), but when I did it was a fun little rush. It would be cool to see a tavern npc for gambling or some golden saucer type finale fantasy 7 city where you can justbhave at it and play cards/games or something like that to gamble. I understand it may reinforce negative values, but evercrack was a disease in itself lol the amount of time with famil work and friends we sacrifice...
Maybe they are all “low limit tables” at first for novice gamblers and you can level up and spend more or whatnot but i think It would be fun if some sort of system/city like that was created. I believe having little things to do to like this to fill in the gaps while waiting for groups, medding, lookingnup strats etc will be critical in pantheon for longevity. Just important for people to feel like they’re able to accomplish something each time they log in.

Sure I kind of miss it.  It's so far out of the question though with today's... um.  I don't know what you call the people who are angry about gambling in video games. Social media people?   All I know is that many people would be quick to point out that this game promotes gambling.

"evercrack was a disease in itself"   -  that's where it'll be one day.  Online gaming addiction will be called a disease. Gamingism.  I don't know.

@stellar right, when we do those 60% success rate grandmaster bow crafts, go into a dungeon with an undergeared shammy as MH, pvp arena without our perfect group combo; we gamble all the time ; )

@tiger hahaha that was an awesome post and I agree...I was born in 88 and my generation is...interesting...All of the 10th place ribbons give out, the hand holding; people are encouraged to be victims instead of survivors/winners, and “gamingism” type “ Politically Correct” groups spring up Alongside rivers of tears and pointed fingers but maybe there is a way to make it into a puzzle type system etc there are a lot of loopholes even the online gambling has made it back to the US, so some things seem to have changed.

Honestly, gambling is bad in real life because it's a business and far from 100% of the revenues are reinvested in winners.

In a game, where you cover no cost of employees, benefits, profits, etc... Gambling is just passing an amount from a player to another throught randomly generated numbers.

Even if you loose, it won't hurt you anyway, you don't need ingame currency to live, eat, and have a roof over the head.

When I played WoW.  I invented a game that was a variation of a "casino" but fun for all parties involved.  It started during downtime on raids where people in the guild would just gamble a 1 off roll.  2 people would random 1000 and the winner would win how ever much was gambled.

Well this was exciting, but I felt it would be more exciting to include more people in this roll.  Well rather than have 10 people random 1000 and the winner just receive all the money.  What we did was random 1000 and the losers all pay the winner the different between what THEY roll and what the winner rolled.  This created alot more flexibility because people were more likely to gamble more since the difference might be very low.

It was a fun thing to do between wipes or while waiting for afks.  And you would be surprised how exciting it was when those rolls started coming in.

A couple years later someone actually took this idea and created an addon that managed everything for you.

That is so cool. its effectively the same as the lottery, apart from the ones to guess far from whatever is rolled...could make it powerball style too, so that if no one gets the number, the pot size increases again each with each roll haha that would be fun I could see that getting people excited in chat

Yea. We came up with a ton of alternatives.  We would have team rolls, 2v1 rolls and ust straight up 25 man rolls.  It was great.

I like the lotto idea.  It could be a great way to raise funds for a guild.  GM rolls a number put of 1000 and then people buy "tickets, or rolls" and if you roll the same number you win 50 or 75% of the pot.  Make it so the rolls are purchased earlier in the week and then actually rolled during raids in front of the whole guild.

Player generated games of chance is one thing, it’s limited and doesn’t pervade the game.

Gambling addiction is real and can ruin lives. The mechanism that creates and reinforces the behavior (conditioning) is the same whether online or in RL.

I would only become concerned if the conditioning mechanic was implemented, in a pervasive way, into the game itself.

This is best (and sadly) demonstrated today by P2W loot boxes in cash shops.

I would support a gambling/mini-game system where you can spend in game items that you earned (coin, jewels, or equipment).

I do not support gambling/mini-game systems where you exchange real life money for in game items or tokens.

But I don't know if gambling is something the leadership team would allow in the game based on their personal values.

There will be gambling...and other types of games. You don't need an npc..just let the players do it lol.

If you want gambling built into a game, you could go try your luck with one of the many that use lootboxes.

Ideally, I would like to see a unique game to Pantheon that is offered in Terminus. Maybe a three card game or something. Easy to learn. Perhaps finally, a fully fleshed out "Kings Cross" or "Kings Court" game. If funding was unlimited, designed by Wizards of the Coast for exclusive use in Pantheon.

The gambling would be like a one way Pachinko style. That is you exchange winnings for tickets, and then turn in tickets for in game items but it stops there. (instead of classic Pachinko where there just happens to be a shop accross the street that buys those very same items for Yen with offers advertised in the window).

The tickets could be tradeable, but the items are non-tradeable.

The things you can use to gamble with would be anything you would normally sell to a merchant but if you used them to gamble the value you would get would be less than what you would get if you outright sold to a merchant. So, if you gambled with coin, it would be like 3pct charge off the top for the house, but you would get a luck beverage that would last a while. So a newb could go in, play one hand but leave with a luck beverage that would last for maybe an hour to increase vague luck in drops or fight success or whatever.

Gems would have a steeper cut, like 10pct, ores 5pct, hides/ silks worse still at 15pct or 20pct (because you can get more of them). The exchange would be like a merchant but instead of coin you would see what coin you have available to play kings court/cross.

Maybe it could be as simple as a matching game or like the italian game Scopa, or even like the dreidle game as far as betting, half, double or whole, or none.

The items would be kinda cool but not game breaking, and could also provide a venue for special items to allow some low brow fiscal control or monetary policy by taking money out of the system through the Kings Cross gambling venue by announcing specialty items for a limited time exchangable for special rickets obtained at that time, with a conversion table for hoarders.

I believe those games with lootboxes got into some hot water in the EU. We don't need that kind of distraction. If people want to gamble leave it to their own methods to figure it out. Like the above mentioned.

is it in in game feature? an impartial method of putting the coin into the slot? i think final fantasy xiv did a great job with their casino environment.

I’m all for it.  Poker, dice, roulett, and more could be fun.  Give someone a reason to just hang out in an Inn, or tavern.  Fun stuff.

Yup, all about it. I would love to see multiple games in multiple locations throughout the world. Maybe games similar to real life ones... But with exotic twists or magical ones. Once over, I'd really like to see huge Easter eggs for perception quests in places like taverns, casinos, inns... maybe you hear something said to another person, maybe you see something handed off. I have always wondered why we all mostly congregate by a bank or a mail box, why not at an inn or tavern for once. Something with games two people can play against each other. Or gambling. A magical music box with all the songs of terminus to play. Just... Something different. Something for everyone to wind down their grind day.

Anything that encourages players to interact in the “tavern” is a good thing, I still have fond memories of watching the dancers in SWG while reducing my battle fatigue. I also think its important not to confuse in game gambling mini games with loot boxes and microtransactions.

Player-hosted gambling in-game I think would be a fun way to spend some down time, maybe win a little coin or some fun items.

If it's a game system, I would only agree with it if it only uses in-game currency and items and cannot be supported by a player spending real life money (like buying tickets/loot crates/etc). That stuff is pervasive in gaming, dangerous, and unethical. It ruins game economies and incentivizes the game being designed around sucking more cash out of its players.

That said, the old Bazaar casinos players would set up in Everquest were great and harmless fun. I would love to see things like that and see how creative players can get with their games.

You do realize the people who actually got caught gambling in the game got banned right?  Like they said they didn't. Want that type of behaviour in their game, if they didn't it would of ran rampant in the game and wouldn't of died off as fast as it became a own way to make money.
